Laundromat needs
EarthWise detergent was created with my own first hand knowledge working in laundromats for four years in addition to interviews & research collected from laundromat owners. Powder detergent was found to be the most cost effective, highly concentrated, & least messy detergent in comparison and testing against liquid, pods, and sheets.
Detergent sizing
EarthWise comes in a variety of different sizing options to help combat the waste that comes with single use detergents in laundromats. Specifically sized to fit in vending machines, sizes 1, 6, 16, & 24 are for laundromats to purchase and sell to customers who rely on buying detergent while doing laundry. 100 is a personal size, to be sold in general stores or to smaller laundromats completing >200 lbs. of wash & fold laundry each day. In contrast 300 is the commercial size, designed for laundromats completing <200 lbs. of wash and fold laundry each day.
100% compostable
EarthWise packaging is purposefully 100% compostable. Packaging for sizes 1, 6, 16, & 24 load detergents are manufactured with cardboard and algae ink, a carbon negative ink made from the carbon byproduct of burning seaweed in clean energy production. Portioning scoops & handles for the heavier 100 & 300 load detergents are made with a PLA bioplastic a certified industrially compostable material.
Community Building
To choose a green alternative for detergent is not always easy. EarthWise aims to streamline and simplify the process but it will never be as simple as throwing empties in the trash just to end up in landfills. EarthWise social medias lift up local laundromats implementing EarthWise detergent products and mission goals. Climate optimism, good news, & hope in the world of recycling and composting proves itself a great motivator towards climate action within communities.
language barriers
Working in laundromats myself I know there is a beautifully diverse customer base, and to assume everyone using EarthWise is speaking and reading English works directly against Earthwise’s mission. Therefore, all social media for EarthWise is released in English, Spanish & French in an effort to reach the most people and make a clean laundry detergent accessible to the most amount of people possible.
ecological design
EarthWise branding is clean and simple, a reflection of their mission: eco-conscious laundry solutions. For physical packaging they use muted neutrals, confined to their strict compostable promise. Digital design for EarthWise allows for a broader color palette to play with.
community bins
Paying for a personal composting service is a luxury many people simply cannot afford, especially in cities where laundromats are heavily relied upon. In an effort to give back to the communities who chose a more eco-friendly laundry detergent, laundromats receive our community collection bins, used solely for collecting EarthWise empties. Collection trucks then take the empties to industrial composting facilities. This lowers carbon emissions that come from trucks going door to door for personal collection, & making this a more financially accessible service.
Earthwise is not only used in laundromats. Users with access to their own washing machines can use EarthWise’s website to find the nearest laundromat participating in the EarthWise’s community collection system to drop off their own empties.
